The ongoing government shutdown in Washington is having a direct and painful impact right here in Spartanburg.
The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen is reporting a significant spike in residents seeking a warm meal, a clear sign of growing local hardship.
The organization served nearly 400 guests on a single day this week, a figure well above its daily average.
Executive Director Monica Floyd confirmed that delays in federal benefits and general economic uncertainty are creating intense stress for many families across the county.
This surge in demand highlights the fragility of many household budgets in the face of federal disruption.
As the shutdown continues, the soup kitchen's role as a community-funded safety net is more critical than ever, underscoring an urgent need for local support to ensure no one goes hungry. Read More... |

In Boiling Springs, the recently opened La Unica Supercenter is now offering authentic Hispanic foods to a diversifying community.
Meanwhile, construction is underway for a new Aldi in Duncan, strategically placed to serve the fast-growing area near Spartanburg Community College's Tyger River Campus.
These projects are part of a larger Upstate trend, with major brands like Publix and Food Lion also expanding.

Spartanburg County is enjoying a booming economy, but a new report warns of a critical workforce challenge ahead.
A major demographic shift means more local workers are retiring than are entering the labor market to replace them.
This pressing issue was detailed in the Talent Gap Analysis 2.0, a study presented at USC Upstate and commissioned by OneSpartanburg Inc.
The analysis highlights a growing skills gap, especially in the manufacturing sector which requires advanced technical abilities.
The report outlines several key strategies to strengthen our local talent pipeline.
Recommendations include improving college affordability, better connecting K-12 students with career paths, and addressing major barriers like the high cost of child care that keep people out of the workforce.
The message is clear: ensuring Spartanburg’s continued growth requires urgent action to develop a more flexible and highly skilled local workforce. Read More... |

Halloween 2025 is almost here, and Converse Heights is ready to welcome all the little ghosts, goblins, and trick-or-treaters for another magical night of neighborhood fun!
The Association is once again partnering with the City of Spartanburg and local law enforcement to ensure a safe and festive evening for everyone. To help keep our trick-or-treaters safe, we’ll be closing select streets to car traffic from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Halloween night. We’ll be announcing the specific street closures very soon, so stay tuned! While the rest of the neighborhood will still be open to Halloween fun, these car-free zones will help reduce traffic congestion and create a safer space for kids to roam freely.
Street parking will remain available throughout Converse Heights, but please avoid blocking driveways. After parking, we encourage you to walk with your children—please don’t follow them by car. For the littlest ones, consider bringing a stroller and enjoy exploring our spooktacular neighborhood!
As a reminder, trick-or-treating in Converse Heights always takes place on Halloween night, which this year is Friday, October 31. Participating houses will have their porch lights on—no light means no candy! |

THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS
The Infamous Stringdusters are a celebrated American progressive bluegrass band known for their virtuosic musicianship, innovative arrangements, and genre-blending style. The GRAMMY® Award-winning Americana quintet—Andy Falco [guitar], Chris Pandolfi [banjo], Andy Hall [dobro], Jeremy Garrett [fiddle], and Travis Book [double bass]—have musical influences that truly run the gamut, but their common denominator is certainly bluegrass— the sound that has in essence defined the course of their career.
The Infamous Stringdusters stand out as the rare group who can team up with contemporary artists on late night television one night and headline the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre the next, and have recently emerged as proprietors behind their newly found independent record label, Americana Vibes.
Manifesting an actual flock of impassioned fandom, much like those who paved the road before them, the band have attracted a faithful international audience that continues to grow. Moreover, their powerful music and performances paved the way for a GRAMMY® Award win in the category of “Best Bluegrass Album” for 2017’s Laws of Gravity, and a number of International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA) in a variety of categories. Known for their energetic live shows and improvisational prowess, The Infamous Stringdusters continue to push the boundaries of bluegrass while honoring its roots, captivating audiences across the country and around the world
