Quote Of The Day

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill

Work has paused on the iconic Spartanburg Clock Tower in Morgan Square following a lawsuit filed by resident Kimberly Branch against the City Council.

The legal challenge accuses the city of violating South Carolina's Heritage Act by planning to demolish the landmark.

Branch is seeking an injunction to stop the demolition, which was approved by a narrow 4-2 council vote.

The decision was made to clear the way for a major redevelopment project by the Johnson Group, which includes plans for new apartments, a hotel, and office space.

City officials state a new clock tower will be built nearby and that the recent work was only to preserve the historic clockworks.

The dispute has even involved the S.C. Attorney General's Office, which noted only the General Assembly can authorize the removal of protected monuments.

The tower’s future now hangs in the balance, caught between historical preservation and urban development.
